  5. Galanin [1,2,3] is a neuropeptide that controls various biological activities:
  6. it regulates  the  release growth hormone, inhibits the release of insulin and
  7. somatostatin, contracts    smooth   muscle   of   the   gastrointestinal   and
  8. genitourinary tract and may be involved in the control of adrenal secretion.

  10. Galanin is  a 29 amino acid peptide processed from a larger precursor protein.
  11. Except in  human,  galanin  is C-terminally amidated.  Its sequence is  highly
  12. conserved and the first fifteen residues are identical in all currently  known
  13. sequences. We have used this N-terminal sequence as a signature pattern.
